Houseplants Are For Everyone, Even Those Without A Green Thumb

Updated: Sep 13, 2025

I frequently hear people say house plants aren’t for them. They claim they lack a green thumb or struggle with plant care. However, with a few simple tips, we can overcome these challenges together.

While you may not be ready for an extravagant outdoor garden right now, you undoubtedly have the space and the potential to learn to care for at least one plant. We are surrounded by greenery, and we are naturally drawn to it, even without consciously seeking it out. We choose floral fabric patterns, take selfies near green spaces, and even purchase artificial plants to achieve a green-like effect in our living spaces.

Psychology reveals that houseplants offer numerous benefits, including stress reduction, improved symptoms of depression, increased productivity, and enhanced concentration in schools and workplaces.

The most effective way to develop confidence as a plant owner is to begin with a simple “beginner” plant. If you are unsure about plant care, avoid selecting plants solely based on their appearance. This approach can lead to disappointment and frustration.

When choosing houseplants, opt for those that are adaptable to varying temperatures, sunlight, and water conditions. These plants are resilient and can easily recover from neglect.

Some beginner houseplant suggestions include Golden Pothos, Snake Plant, Spider Plant, Aloe Vera, Philodendrons, Diffenbachia (dumb cane), ZZ Plant, Peace Lily, Corn Plant, Chinese Evergreen, Chinese Money Plant, and Baby Rubber Plant. Since they all have similar growing needs, start with one or two of them.

Until you have gained some knowledge and confidence in maintaining your plants, it is advisable to avoid high humidity and high-maintenance plants such as ferns and orchids.

Becoming a more effective plant owner involves being mindful of your plant purchases. Visit a plant store or garden center where knowledgeable experts can guide you in choosing the right plant. They can provide valuable care advice and answer any questions you may have. While big-box stores and grocery stores offer a wide variety of lush tropical plants, they may not be the best choice for beginners. Getting houseplants here can be challenging and overwhelming, especially for new plant parents.

Remember, caring for houseplants is not rocket science. Once you get the hang of it, it can be quite relaxing and rewarding. Don’t get discouraged if your first plant or two don’t survive your care; there’s no such thing as a perfect plant parent. Even experts have their share of failures. Incorporate plant care into your regular routines. Eventually, you’ll likely spend more time with them and less time with other activities. Afterall, houseplants are kind, patient and they make great listeners.
