Congratulations on receiving your tropical plant arrangement! The presence of greenery in any environment can create a serene atmosphere. With proper care, your arrangement will bring you joy for years to come.
Your arrangement, whether a single plant or multiple, comes with general care instructions. Most tropical plants thrive in bright indirect sunlight, moderate to high humidity, and slightly moist soil. Professionals often group plants with similar needs to simplify care. In addition, some plants may have been added that can tolerate a range of conditions and still flourish while complementing your arrangement.
You likely received your arrangement by either local delivery, a shipment or as a favor at an event. The professionals undoubtedly took great care to package your product to minimize damage and ensure the plants’ health during transit.
Even with the healthiest plants and meticulous packaging, plants experience stress during their journey to you. Temperature changes and periods of darkness can be adjustments, and that’s perfectly normal.
The outcome of your gift’s health depends on what you do when your new plant arrangement arrives.
Acclimation is the gentle process of helping a plant recover and adapt to its new environment. Once it reaches you, patience and the right steps are crucial for long-term success.
Here are some tips to ensure the best results when caring for your new arrival:
Open the package immediately and carefully remove any tape, wrapping, or other outer material.
Gently remove any packaging from around the leaves and soil line. If any soil was disturbed during transport, carefully return it to the pot and press firmly around the plant’s base for support.
Inspect each plant and prune away any yellowing leaves. This is perfectly normal during the transition period.
Check the soil for moisture. Most likely, your arrangement was watered just before leaving the nursery. Watering before transit helps the plant cope with the stress. However, if the soil is dry or the plants look wilted or dehydrated, add a light drink of water just enough to moisten the soil slightly. Avoid overwatering.
Allow the arrangement to stabilize. Avoid repotting any of the plants as they have already been carefully planted and may still be recovering from the move.
Choose a location for the arrangement where it can receive light. After shipping, your plant’s leaves are more sensitive to light. Place it in bright, indirect light, near a window but out of direct sunlight. If your space is dim, a low-intensity grow light on a timer (8–10 hours per day) helps mimic gentle daylight.
It’s normal for plants to look slightly droopy or lose a leaf or two within the first week. This is part of the transition. Once acclimated, new growth will appear, and any minor imperfections will fade as the plant adjusts to its new environment.
Now that you’ve set up your new plant arrangement, resist the temptation to overwater or move it frequently. Stability is crucial. After the initial few weeks, you can gradually incorporate a watering schedule into your daily routine.
Stability and acclimation are essential for the well-being of your plants. Each green space location is unique, so it’s crucial to create the appropriate environment and allow your plant to adjust naturally. Watch for new growth, a clear sign that your arrangement has settled into new space. Acclimation provides an opportunity for you to help your new plant find its rhythm and witness its flourishing for years to come.
