The ZZ plant, scientifically known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia, is a remarkable and low-maintenance plant renowned for its resilience.

Originating from forests of Eastern Africa, including Kenya, KwaZulu-Natal, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, it has garnered various names such as Zanzibar gem, ZZ plant, Zuzu plant, aroid palm, eternity plant, and emerald palm.

Distinguished by its simple, long, and thick stems adorned with glossy almond-shaped leaves, the ZZ plant exhibits a slow growth rate. Though is a slow grower, when properly cared for, it can thrive for decades.

The plant’s anatomy includes a potato-shaped bulb that stores water for the plant. Consequently, watering the ZZ plant once or twice a month, especially during the growing season, is sufficient. Overwatering is by far,  the primary reason for its decline.   It leads to the formation of yellowing leaves, stem drop, mushy and rotting bulbs and roots  and an unpleasant odor; sure signs of root rot.

Since the early 90’s the ZZ plant has become a popular choice due to its simplicity of care. It’s quite versatile and can even tolerate low light conditions.

Among the numerous varieties of the ZZ plant, one rare beauty stands out: the Zamioculus zamiifolia ’Dowon’, commonly known by nurseries is the ‘Black Queen’. Its commercially own as ‘Raven’ and its creation is licensed by Costa Farms.  This cultivar begins its growth with green leaves and develops striking black foliage as it matures.

Other notable cultivars include:

Zamicro’: A dwarf variety with smaller leaves and a more compact, bushy form.

Zenzi’: A dwarf variety with small, tightly curled leaves.

Lucky’: A variegated type with a marbled or striped pattern of yellow and white on the foliage.

Gold Variegated’: This variety exhibits vibrant yellow and green variegated patterns.

Chameleon’: Initially characterized by bright yellow leaves that mature into rich green.

Supernova’: Distinctive by its sharp-tipped leaves, capable of maturing into a dark green or black color.

Jungle Warrior’: A dark-leaved variety akin to ‘Raven,’ primarily available in Australia.

Akebono’: This variety boasts oval leaves adorned with mottled gold patches that gradually transform into light green over time.

For plant enthusiasts seeking low-maintenance plants that can flourish even in dim light conditions and with minimal care, the distinguished ZZ plant presents an exceptional option.  Add one to your green space or collect them all!
